Gerber Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance Policy Review

To start, it’s important to keep in mind that guaranteed issue (GI) is a specific type of life insurance without a physical:

  • Anyone can qualify for GI, regardless of health (as long as you’re within the issue age range)
  • Policies are expensive for the amount of coverage you receive
  • You will likely have a waiting period before your beneficiaries would qualify for the death benefit

Because of this, guaranteed issue life insurance should almost always be your last resort for securing life insurance.

Below are 5 important features to evaluate for Gerber’s guaranteed issue life insurance.

*Policy features are subject to change.

When evaluating life insurance without a physical, start with the following:

  1. Wait time – how long you have to wait before your application is approved and your life insurance policy is issued
  2. Issue ages – the age range of the applicant that the life insurance company is willing to insure
  3. Policy amount – the dollar amount (face amount) the life insurance company offers to applicants
  4. Policy length – the number of years the life insurance company will allow the policy to last
  5. No Exam – Is it important to you to skip the needles, nurses and liquid samples?

How does Gerber’s guaranteed issue life insurance measure up?

1. Approval for Gerber Life Guaranteed Issue is Immediate

Gerber’s guaranteed issue policies issue immediately – as soon as you make your first premium payment.

2. Gerber Life Issue Ages are from 50-80 Years Old

You must be between the ages of 50 – 80 to qualify.

Note: If you are between the ages of 81 – 85, consider AIG guaranteed issue life insurance.

Also: Great Western guaranteed issue life insurance will write life insurance policies starting at age 40.

3. Policy Amounts Range from $5k – $25k

You have the option to purchase a policy for $5,000 – $25,000.

Think of this face amount as modest. It’s best for covering funeral expenses and debts.

Gerber’s GI policies have a cash value component. Loans may be taken out on the cash value, not to exceed the net cash value of the policy at the next policy anniversary.

In other words, you can borrow the available cash value, but not more.

Important – Your death benefit is graded. In other words, for the first two years of your policy, if a death occurs (other than an accident), your premiums (plus 10% interest) will be returned to your beneficiary.

The death benefit is unavailable until two years after your policy issued unless an accident (as defined in your contract) is the cause of death.

4. Gerber Life Guaranteed Issue Policy Does Not Expire

Gerber’s guaranteed issue is whole (permanent) life insurance.

Whole life insurance lasts for your whole life, meaning that – as long as you pay your life insurance premiums – your policy will not expire.

5. No Medical Exam is Required

Life insurance with no physical exam required is ideal for many applicants. You get to skip:

  • Nurses
  • Needles
  • Liquid Samples

Additionally, your policy is typically issued in a fraction of the amount of time than a medically underwritten policy takes.

Note – in addition to guaranteed issue, Gerber is a top provider of baby life insurance.

It’s important to remember that guaranteed issue (GI) life insurance only makes sense in certain circumstances. Almost always, GI should not be your first stop when shopping for coverage.

Gerber’s guaranteed issue may be a good fit for you if:

  • You have exhausted other life insurance options
    • Note – Collaborate with an independent agent to verify your options. You may have other options and not realize it.
  • You need a modest policy to cover end of life expenses
    • Keep in mind – A funeral alone costs, on average, $7,000 – $10,000
    • Other end of life expenses (i.e. medical bills) could drastically increase end of life expenses
  • You are in poor health
  • You are between the ages of 50 – 80

How to Apply for Life Insurance with Gerber Life

You will want to do two things to apply for guaranteed issue life insurance (or any type of no exam life insurance, for that matter):

  1. Partner Up – collaborate with an independent life insurance agent (that’s us).  An independent agent will have access to the top-rated life insurance companies to find the best policy to fit your needs. They’re not held captive to a particular carrier.
  2. Prep – be ready to complete your application by having your important information readily available. You will want to have your social security number and beneficiary information at hand to process your application immediately.

As soon as you apply and your initial payment has been made, your policy is active.
